FAQ's

Can I have my shed any colour I like?

Waikato Shed Company offers the full range of Coloursteel colours, and best of all it makes no difference to the price what colours you choose. The roof, walls, flashings, doors and joinery of your new shed can all be individually chosen.

What is Zincalume?

Zincalume is high tensile steel with a zinc/aluminium coating applied using a continuous hot dip process. The Zincalume steel coating combines the corrosion protection of aluminium with the sacrificial protection of zinc, giving the advantages of both metals. The resulting alloy coating enhances corrosion resistance, making it ideal for such applications as roofing and cladding.

What is Coloursteel?

Coloursteel is the same Zincalume coated steel mentioned above, to which a pre-painted finish system is applied and baked on. The system is designed to provide protection against corrosion in areas where moderate to severe environmental conditions are experienced. Plus it looks great!

What is the difference between Coloursteel Maxx & Coloursteel Endura?

Coloursteel Endura is "standard" Coloursteel and is suitable for use in all but very severe marine areas. Very severe marine environments are characterised by heavy salt deposits and the almost constant smell of salt spray in the air. Typically Endura can be used as roofing 100-500 metres from the coast, but not as wall cladding within 500 metres.

Coloursteel Maxx has a heavier Zincalume coating with a super polyester pre-painted finish system applied. The system is designed to provide protection against corrosion in areas where severe to very severe environmental conditions are experienced. Coloursteel Maxx can be used as roofing and cladding in very severe marine environments up to 100 metres from exposed surf beaches.

Once I decide on my shed how long does it take?

The first step is for us to obtain plans and an Engineering PS1 for your shed. This can be as quick as 2 days but can be up to 2 weeks. Then a Building Consent is applied for, which typically takes 20 working days to be approved.

Once a Building Consent has been granted and the kit deposit paid, your kit will be ordered and delivered to site in 3-4 weeks. During this time earthworks and concrete slab/footings will be completed.

A building team will arrive after the kit has been delivered to site. Every building is different, however we can give you an indication of the number of days required to build your shed. You will be surprised how quickly your new shed will go up.

How is a Building Consent obtained?

If we are building your shed we are happy to assist in obtaining the consent. Our Multibuild shed design software provides the plans and technical information required by Council. Our shed designs meet all the requirements of the NZ Building Code. In addition we need a Certificate of Title for the property and a site plan. We do not charge for assisting with the Consent process.

What are your concrete floor specifications?

Our typical concrete floor would be 100mm thick 20MPa concrete with polythene moisture barrier, steel mesh, and cuts to minimize cracking. Other thicknesses are available if required.

Do I have to have a slab down before I put my shed up?

No, you have two options:

  • Option 1:
You can have your concrete slab poured to the correct dimensions for the shed and then build your shed. Your wall sheets will overlap the slab by about 50mm all around your shed to weatherproof the shed and give you a professional finish. This is our preferred option.
  • Option 2:
You can build on pre poured individual footings, leaving a compacted floor. You can then infill your shed with concrete required at a later date. When doing an infill slab, avoid contact of wet cement and the Coloursteel cladding.

Are there different quality steel frames?

Different companies use different products and construction methods. All our shed kits are manufactured by Metalcraft using NZ Steel / BlueScope steel. Our frames are all bolted, not screwed, and our sheds are engineered to suit the area you are in.

How are your knee and apex connections made?

We use thick (up to 6mm) solid steel brackets bolted to the column & rafter rather than lighter weight, wrap-around folded brackets.

Can I choose the pitch of my roof to match my house?

Our standard roof pitches are 5 degrees (monopitch or lean-to only), 11, 15, 22, 30 and even 45 degrees.

What roller doors are available?

There is a large variety of roller doors available at various heights and widths, ranging from 2.2m high x 1.2m wide to 5.0m x 5.0m and basically any size in between.

How are your shed attached to the concrete?

The majority of the time we do this with dynabolts. In some situations the engineer may specify the use of hold down brackets set in the concrete, or even "leg in ground" where the portal column is set in concrete. The advantages of using dynabolts are that the walls will always be straight and true, which can be a problem if brackets set in the concrete are even a few millimetres out. It is also much easier if building your own shed from kitset.

Are your sheds suitable for very high wind zones?

Absolutely. We pay particular attention to getting the correct design & site specific engineering. Unlike some shed systems that aren't engineered specifically for a site, our sheds are strong and very robust.
